School Library

The School Library is a welcoming place with a wide range of books suitable for the whole school. From picture books to young fiction and fact books to poetry the Library is a place to read, browse, relax and learn.

Supported by our full time Librarian, pupils can use the Library at lunchtimes, during Library lessons and for one-to-one reading throughout the day.

Alongside books, the Library also has the weekly newspaper, First News, and the magazines Aquila and Whizz, Pop, Bang and all our resources are aimed at supporting learning and promoting reading for pleasure.

Pupils in Years 1 and 2 can borrow one book at a time for up to two weeks. From Year 3 upwards pupils can borrow two books. The Library supports reading and creativity with regular displays, pupil competitions and activities.

Pupils are shown how to scan books so they can return and issue their own books using our Junior Librarian system, developing their skills to become lifelong learners.

Opening

The Library is open to all pupils on Monday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes. Year 1 Reading Club meets on Tuesday lunchtimes and Years 2 to 4 meets for Library Club on Wednesday lunchtimes.

Pupils also visit the Library for their Library lessons where they can choose books to borrow and take part in guided reading and other reading activities.

Pre-School children also enjoy regular visits to the Library and we have a large stock of picture books in easy to access stands.

Activities

Author visits and book activities are a regular feature at the school. Book Week is held every year to coincide with World Book Day and the Travelling Book Company holds an annual Book Fair in the Library.

The Library is a member of the School Libraries Association and works in association with many other organisations to provide a range of activities and reading opportunities for students.

The Library is run by our full time Librarian, Mrs Wheater, who is a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

Our Year 6 pupils also take an active part in the running of the Library. The Year 6 Librarians take on a position of responsibility throughout the year and support all aspects of the Library, as well as promoting reading across the whole school. The Library also supports the HOLDFAST Reading Challenge Awards for Year 6 pupils.
